IFC held 2-day International Conference on "Upstream water diversion: a disaster for Bangladesh" was organized on 4-5 January 2006

After the Long March and grand rally held on 4 March 2005 in protest against 'Indian River Inter-link Project', a follow up program of 2-day workshop was organized on 4-5 January 2006 by the International Farakka Committee Inc., N.Y, (IFC), along with Bangladesh IFC (BD-IFC) and IFC North America at the Engineers Institute in Bangladesh. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperative minister Mr. Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, M.P. was the Chief guest, Awami Leage Presidium Member and former Water Resources Minister Abdur Razzak, and present State Minister for water resources Mr. Goutam Charabarti, attended the workshop as special guests. Mr. Rashed Khan Menon, President of Workers Party of Bangladesh, Dilip Barua, General Secretary of Shyammobadi Dal, Dr. Jasim Uddin Ahmad, President of Bangladesh Farakka Committee, were present as guests of honour. The workshop was presided over by Atiqur R. K. Yusufzai Salu, Chairman of Internal Farakka Committee and Syed Tipu Sultan, Secretary General IFC and Mohammed Hossain Khan. Senior Assistant Secretary General of IFC organized the workshop. Mr. Erfanul Bari, General Secretary, Bangladesh IFC and Nazma Ahmed, vice president Bangladesh IFC moderated the workshop.

Awami Leage Presidium Member and former Water Resources Minister Abdur Razzak, and present State Minister for water resources Mr. Goutam Charabarti, Mr. Rashed Khan Menon, President of Workers Party of Bangladesh, Dilip Barua, General Secretary of Shyammobadi Dal , attended the workshop as special guests.

Prof Dr. Jasim Uddin Ahmad, President and Engineer Dr. S.I. Khan, Senior Vice President, IFC Bangladesh Presented the Key note paper at the conference. Prof. Khalequzzaman presented the technical paper at the conference.


Mr. Awlad Hossain Khan, Senior Vice President, Mr. Mohammed Saleh, Vice President IFC, Dr. Khalilur Rahman Vice Chancellor, Maulana Vashani University took part in the discussion.


It has started at 9:00 a.m. of 4 January 2006 and ended at 7:00 p.m. of 5 January 2006, more than 10,000 people attended the conference.
